About this publication

Techno-nationalism is an approach that links the development, production, and control of technology to a nation's economic prosperity, security, and national power. Within this framework, technological capability is viewed not merely as a source of economic growth, but as a strategic asset that contributes to national independence, international standing, prestige, and the construction of national identity.

India's successful landing of the Chandrayaan-3 mission on the Moon in 2023 provides a prominent example of techno-nationalism in practice. Beyond its scientific and technological achievements, the mission was presented as a demonstration of India's technological self-reliance, innovative capacity, and growing international stature. It also supported broader national objectives related to industrial development and the projection of India as a leading technological power.

Techno-nationalism is significant because it connects technological advancement to the politics of power and the international position of states. In this context, investments in technology are not justified solely by economic or security considerations; they also serve as instruments for strengthening national autonomy, enhancing international prestige, and reinforcing collective national identity. Technological achievements thus become symbols of national success and strategic influence in an increasingly technology-driven world.
